Picking the perfect finish for your painting project shouldn't be a headache. With all the different brands and finishes out there, it may seem a little overwhelming. But don't worry. We're here to help. Lets take a look at the different types of sheens and where to use them.
Flat - The lowest of the lows. Also known as - Ultra Matte, Matte, and Low Lustre. Shine Level (Sheen) - Low. Durability - Medium-Low. Recommended in Low-Moisture Areas.
Flat is the perfect touch for Ceilings, Closets, Adult Bedrooms, and Garages. These areas are low traffic areas where not to much cleaning is needed. It also does a nice job at hiding wall imperfections and perfect when touching up.
Eg-Shell (Satin) - The One for All. Also known as - Eggshell, Pearl, Med Lustre and Satin. Shine Level (Sheen) - Medium Shine. Durability - Medium. Recommended in Low-Moisture Areas.
Eg-Shell is the most widely used sheen. It can be used for most interior areas. It's the perfect finish for Living Rooms, Family Rooms, Kitchens, and hallways. Could also be used on trim if a less shine is desired. These areas are moderate traffic areas that would need a good scuff resistant and cleanable finish. Eg-shell is that finsih.
Semi-Gloss - The Kid Friendly. Also known as velvet. Shine Level (Sheen) - Medium-High Shine.Durability - High. Recommended in Moisture-Prone Areas.
Semi-Gloss is the perfect finish for my kid draws on the wall area (Childs bedroom), Bathroom, Trim, Wainscotting, Moulding, Doors, Cabinetry, and woodwork. It works best in high traffic areas where scrubbability and scuff resistance are needed.
High Gloss - The Shine of Shines. Also known as Gloss. Shine Level (Sheen) - Highest. Durability - Very High. Recommended in Moisture-Prone Areas.
High-Gloss is the perfect finish if you are looking for a dramatic glossy look. This finish should be used sparingly. Best used on accent pieces, Fireplaces, Doors, Kitchen, Cabinets, and trim. Excellent in areas that need frequent cleaning.
